Online Roulette History

Roulette, which takes it’s name from the French word for ‘little wheel’ has a long and proud tradition as one of the most popular casino games. The origins of the game are unclear, although most people believe that it was invented by French mathematician Blaise Pascal in 1655 during attempts to make a perpetual motion device. Despite this generally being the recognised version of events some people still believe that Roulette history begins in China and that the game was brought to Europe through the spice roots. Either way, since it’s introduction, Roulette has been the focal point of many casinos and is a casino game loved by all.

After a slow start in Paris casinos, Roulette history took a turn in 1842 thanks to two brothers – Francois and Louis Blanc – who introduced the zero pocket and thus gave birth to the modern Roulette wheel. Despite this introduction, Roulette was still little known until, some years later, Francois and his son Camille introduced the Roulette game to Prince Charles III of Monaco. The Blancs proceeded to open the first casinos in Monte Carlo and in so doing set both Monte Carlo and Roulette on the road to gambling fame. Until 1933, Roulette was only played in the Casinos of Monaco.

The 1800s saw the introduction of Roulette to America, although it was unpopular with US casinos until the introduction of a new wheel that incorporated a second zero pocket. This version – now commonly known as American Roulette – provided an even set of numbers and saw the game take off in America.

After the introduction of the American wheel, little changed with the casino game of Roulette until the recent introduction of Online Roulette. With the advent of the internet and the constant increase in technological capabilities Roulette was opened up to a worldwide audience and the aura of exclusivity was stripped away. This has taken the popularity of what is probably the most famous casino game to levels that were previously unthinkable.
